UPSC Prelims 2013 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders

Consider the following pairs: Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?

  1. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve – Garo Hills
  2. Loktak Lake – Barail Range
  3. Namdapha National Park – Dafla Hill
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) 1 only

Only Nokrek is right: it lies in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

Statement by statement

1. ✓ CORRECT Nokrek (Meghalaya) is in the Garo Hills.

2. ✓ CORRECT Loktak Lake (Manipur) lies in the valley south of the Barail range.

3. ✓ CORRECT Namdapha (Arunachal Pradesh) lies near the Dafla and Patkai hills.

The idea

A reserve, lake and hill range must be matched by their actual physical locations. Being in the same broad north-eastern region does not make two places a correct pair. Distinguish Meghalaya’s plateau hills, Manipur’s valley and the eastern Arunachal frontier.

Why the others are wrong

(b) Loktak Lake is in the Manipur valley, not the Barail Range; Namdapha is in Changlang near the Patkai hills, not the Dafla Hills.

(c) Pairs 2 and 3 are wrong.

(d) Pair 1 is correct.

Also know

Namdapha lies in Changlang district near the Patkai landscape, while the Dafla hills are farther west in Arunachal Pradesh. Loktak lies in the Manipur valley and supports the phumdi habitat of Keibul Lamjao. Nokrek protects wild citrus relatives; these ecological facts help keep the three locations distinct.

🔒 Nokrek: citrus gene sanctuary · Loktak: phumdis · Namdapha: four big cats.
