UPSC Prelims 1982 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders
Duncan pass is located between
- (a) North Andaman and South Andaman
- (b) North Andaman and Car Nicobar
- (c) South Andaman and Car Nicobar
- (d) South Andaman and Little Andaman
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) South Andaman and Little Andaman
Duncan Passage separates South Andaman (Rutland Island) from Little Andaman.
The idea
An island passage is a water gap, even when an older question calls it a “pass”. Distinguish a gap within one island group from a gap between two groups. Reading the island chain from north to south prevents confusing Duncan Passage with the Ten Degree Channel.
South Andaman and Rutland → Duncan Passage → Little Andaman → Ten Degree Channel → Car Nicobar
Why the others are wrong
(a) North and South Andaman are separated by narrow creeks.
(b) Car Nicobar is far south, across the Ten Degree Channel.
(c) Car Nicobar is across the Ten Degree Channel.
Also know
The main Andaman group includes North, Middle and South Andaman, with Little Andaman farther south. Great Nicobar is at the southern end of the Nicobar group. Mountain passes such as Nathu La are land corridors and belong to a different feature category.
🔒 Duncan Passage (S. Andaman–Little Andaman) · Ten Degree Channel (Andaman–Nicobar) · Six Degree Channel (Great Nicobar–Sumatra).
