UPSC Prelims 2007 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders
The Stilwell Road, built in 1940s (which was recently in news), connects which of the following?
- (a) Agartala in India and Yangon in Myanmar via Bangladesh
- (b) Ledo in India and Kunming in China via Myanmar
- (c) Kalimpong in India and Lhasa in Tibet via Nathula
- (d) Imphal in India and Bangkok in Thailand via Myanmar
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Ledo in India and Kunming in China via Myanmar
The WWII Stilwell Road ran from Ledo (Assam) through Myanmar to Kunming (China).
The idea
A cross-border road is identified by its endpoints and the countries it crosses. The Stilwell route was a wartime supply corridor built to reach China through the adjoining north-eastern frontier. Historical connectivity does not imply that every section is an open modern transit route.
Ledo in Assam → Patkai frontier → Northern Myanmar → Connection with the Burma Road → Yunnan in China → Kunming supply destination
Why the others are wrong
(c) Kalimpong–Lhasa was an old trade route via Nathu La.
Also know
Nathu La is in Sikkim on the route towards Tibet, while Moreh in Manipur faces Tamu in Myanmar. Pangsau Pass lies on the India–Myanmar frontier along the Ledo Road corridor. These are separate gateways, not interchangeable names for one route.
