UPSC Prelims 1979 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders
In which of the following States the yield of forest wealth per acre is highest?
- (a) Uttar Pradesh
- (b) Madhya Pradesh
- (c) Kerala
- (d) Assam
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Madhya Pradesh
The key picks Madhya Pradesh.
The idea
Yield per acre measures output from a unit of land, whereas total forest wealth depends on both area and yield. The output might mean timber volume or its value, which are different measures. A historical ranking needs the original definition and data year; forest area alone cannot establish it.
Why the others are wrong
(c) Kerala’s forests are rich per hectare — a strong alternative.
The trap
MP has the largest forest AREA; yield per acre is a different measure.
Also know
An acre is about 0.405 hectare. Tropical evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests and dry deciduous forests differ in species and growth conditions. Standing timber stock, yearly growth and commercial harvest are separate indicators, so none should silently replace the others.
🔒 MP: largest forest area in India.
