UPSC Prelims 1982 · World Geography · Rocks, Quakes and Landforms
Generally speaking, all rocks may be classified into three major groups, such as
- (a) Marble, limestone, igneous
- (b) Igneous, limestone, mica
- (c) Igneous, marble, sedimentary
- (d) Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic
Rocks are igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic.
The idea
The three major rock families are classified by how they form. Cooling melt, consolidating deposits and altering an existing rock are different processes. Individual names such as marble or mica do not all belong at the same level of classification.
Melt cools into igneous rock → Weathering produces loose material → Deposition and consolidation make sedimentary rock → Heat and pressure produce metamorphic rock → Further heating may melt rock and restart the cycle
Why the others are wrong
(a) Marble and limestone are rock names, not groups.
Elimination technique
Options mixing a whole family with individual rocks or a mineral do not give three comparable groups. Only (d) lists the three origin-based families.
Also know
Granite and basalt are igneous; sandstone and limestone are sedimentary; marble and quartzite are metamorphic. Quartz, feldspar and mica are minerals that can be ingredients of rocks. The rock cycle has many paths: a rock need not pass through all three families in a fixed order.
🔒 Rock cycle: igneous → sedimentary → metamorphic.
