UPSC Prelims 2020 · World Geography · Air, Winds and Climates
Consider the following statements: Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- Jet streams occur in the Northern Hemisphere only.
- Only some cyclones develop an eye.
- The temperature inside the eye of a cyclone is nearly 10°C lesser than that of the surroundings.
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 2 and 3 only
- (c) 2 only
- (d) 1 and 3 only
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) 2 only
Only statement 2 survives.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG — both hemispheres Jet streams (polar front and subtropical) blow in both hemispheres.
2. ✓ CORRECT Only mature, intense cyclones develop a clear eye.
3. ✗ WRONG — the eye is warmer Sinking air in the eye warms by compression, so the eye is warmer than its surroundings.
The idea
Jet streams are narrow bands of fast upper-air wind linked to strong horizontal temperature contrasts. They occur in both hemispheres. A tropical cyclone’s eye is a separate feature created as its circulation becomes organised. Descending air in the eye warms by compression, while the surrounding eyewall contains strong rising motion.
Tropical storm becomes well organised → Deep ascent concentrates around an eyewall → Some central air descends → Compression warms the descending air → Clouds thin in the centre → A calm, relatively warm eye can appear
Why the others are wrong
(a) Jet streams are not limited to one hemisphere.
(b) Makes the eye colder; it is warmer.
(d) Accepts both false statements.
The trap
A “cold eye” sounds right because the eye is calm and clear.
Elimination technique
A hemisphere-only claim fails because upper-air jet systems exist north and south of the equator. The cold-eye claim fails because descent warms the eye. Removing statements 1 and 3 leaves statement 2 alone, code (c).
Also know
Polar-front and subtropical jets are generally westerly; a tropical easterly jet develops seasonally over South Asia. Jets are near the tropopause, not surface wind belts. The eyewall has intense winds and rain even when the eye is calm. Weak tropical storms and most ordinary extratropical lows do not show the classic clear tropical eye.
🔒 Cyclone eye: calm, clear, descending warm air; eyewall = strongest winds and rain.
