UPSC Prelims 1984 · World Geography · Air, Winds and Climates

Arrange the following three atmospheric layers starting from the surface of the earth: A. Stratosphere B. Ionosphere C. Troposphere

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) C, A, B

Troposphere → stratosphere → ionosphere.

The idea

To order atmospheric layers, begin with the surface weather layer and move upward. The ozone-rich stable layer comes next. The main ionised upper-air region lies above those two, though ionisation does not define a temperature layer. The mesosphere is omitted from the question’s three-item list, not absent from the atmosphere.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Starts with the stratosphere.

(d) Puts the ionosphere below the stratosphere.

Elimination technique

C, the troposphere, must be first, leaving (b) and (d). A, the stratosphere, is below the main ionospheric region B, so C-A-B selects (b).

Also know

The full temperature-based order is troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Ionospheric regions overlap the upper mesosphere and thermosphere. Many meteors burn in the mesosphere, and auroras occur mainly in the upper atmosphere. Boundaries are named tropopause, stratopause and mesopause.

🔒 T → S → M → T/I → E.
