Jupiter completes one circuit of the Sun in

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) 12 years

Jupiter takes about 11.86 years to orbit the Sun.

The idea

A planet’s year is the time it takes to complete an orbit around the Sun. More distant planets have larger orbits and move more slowly along them. Their years are therefore longer even when their daily rotation is fast.

Planet orbits farther from the Sun → Its orbital path is longer → Its orbital speed is lower → Completing the orbit takes longer → Its year exceeds Earth’s year

Also know

A planet’s orbital period and rotation period are independent measures. Jupiter rotates in roughly ten hours despite its long year. Saturn’s year is about 29.5 Earth years, Uranus’s about 84, and Neptune’s about 165. Kepler’s third law links orbital period to orbit size.

🔒 Jupiter ~12 y · Saturn ~29.5 y · Uranus ~84 y · Neptune ~165 y.
