UPSC Prelims 1985 · World Geography · Earth in Space
The earth rotates around its axis from
- (a) East to West
- (b) West to East
- (c) North to South
- (d) South to North
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) West to East
Earth rotates from west to east — so the Sun rises in the east.
The idea
The apparent daily motion of the sky is opposite to Earth’s actual rotation. As Earth turns, each location enters and leaves the sunlit half of the globe. The rotation direction is described relative to the poles, not by the movement of an observer on the surface.
Earth turns west to east → A place turns into the sunlit half → Sun appears to rise in the east → Place turns across the sunlit half → Sun appears to set in the west
Why the others are wrong
(a) That is the Sun’s apparent motion.
The trap
The Sun seems to move east to west because Earth turns west to east.
Also know
Viewed from above the North Pole, Earth’s rotation is anticlockwise; viewed from above the South Pole, it is clockwise. Rotation causes day and night, while revolution together with axial tilt causes seasons. Venus has retrograde rotation, so the Sun’s daily direction there is reversed.
🔒 Rotation W→E (anticlockwise seen from above the North Pole).
