UPSC Prelims 1992 · World Geography · Countries, Rivers and Resources
Which one of the following shows the correct sequence of occurrence of four towns/ cities as one proceeds from west to east?
- (a) Ajmer, Darbhanga, Kohima, Silchar
- (b) Surat, Wardha, Rourkela, Bharuch
- (c) Pandharpur, Gulbarga, Kottagudam, Visakhapatnam
- (d) Anand, Rajkot, Dhanbad, Aizawl
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Pandharpur, Gulbarga, Kottagudam, Visakhapatnam
Pandharpur (75.3°E) → Gulbarga (76.8°E) → Kothagudem (80.6°E) → Visakhapatnam (83.2°E).
Why the others are wrong
(a) Kohima (94.1°E) is east of Silchar (92.8°E), so the order breaks at the end.
(b) Bharuch is in Gujarat, far west.
(d) Rajkot is west of Anand.
The trap
Each wrong option breaks the order at just one town.
🔒 Use longitudes; one wrong town is enough to break a sequence.
