UPSC Prelims 1995 · World Geography · Rocks, Quakes and Landforms
The palaeomagnetic results obtained from India indicate that in the past, the Indian land mass has moved:
- (a) northward
- (b) southward
- (c) eastward
- (d) westward
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) northward
Palaeomagnetic records show India drifted north from Gondwana until it hit Asia.
The idea
Some minerals preserve the direction of Earth’s magnetic field when a rock forms. That direction helps estimate the rock’s former latitude and orientation. Comparing rocks of different ages can reveal a continent’s journey, even after its present position has changed.
Lava cools → Magnetic minerals align with the field → The alignment becomes locked in the rock → Measure rocks of different ages → Estimate their former latitudes → Reconstruct plate movement
Also know
India separated from Gondwana and crossed the former Tethys Ocean before colliding with Eurasia. Alternating magnetic bands on either side of mid-ocean ridges are another use of rock magnetism: they record field reversals and sea-floor spreading. A magnetic reversal is a change in field polarity, not the physical flipping of a continent.
🔒 India plate moved ~15–20 cm/yr before collision (~50 Mya).
