UPSC Prelims 1990 · Environment · Wild Places

Which one of the following pairs is correctly matched?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Nagaon → Maharashtra

Navegaon (printed here as “Nagaon”) National Park is in Gondia district, Maharashtra.

The idea

Three of the four pairs fail on well-known facts, so the remaining one is the answer even if its spelling looks strange. Gir is in Gujarat, Palamau is in Jharkhand (Bihar at that time), and Amravati is a city of Maharashtra.

Gir → Gujarat, not Madhya Pradesh → Palamau → Jharkhand, not Gujarat → Amravati → Maharashtra, not West Bengal → What is left: Navegaon → Maharashtra

Why the others are wrong

(b) Palamau is in Jharkhand.

(c) Gir is in Gujarat.

(d) There is no Amravati park in West Bengal; Amravati is in Maharashtra.

The trap

Eliminate the three clear mismatches.

Also know

Navegaon is built around a lake in Gondia district and today forms the Navegaon–Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Palamau (Betla) was one of the first nine tiger reserves, and the first tiger count by pugmarks in India was done there in 1932.

🔒 Navegaon NP = Maharashtra · Palamau TR = Jharkhand · Gir = Gujarat.
