UPSC Prelims 1985 · Environment · Wild Places

Which of the following parks/sanctuaries is/are correctly matched with their location? I. Ghana → Assam II. Gir → Rajasthan III. Manas → Assam IV. Corbett → M.P. V. Periyar → Kerala VI. Dudwa → U.P.

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) III, V and VI

Manas (Assam), Periyar (Kerala) and Dudhwa (UP) are right. Ghana is in Rajasthan, Gir in Gujarat, Corbett in Uttarakhand.

The idea

Six of India’s oldest and best-known parks. Fix each to its State once, with its special feature, and such questions become free marks.

Keoladeo Ghana → Bharatpur, Rajasthan → water birds → Gir → Gujarat → Asiatic lion → Manas → Assam, on the Bhutan border → golden langur, pygmy hog → Corbett → Uttarakhand → India’s first national park (1936) → Periyar → Kerala → lake and elephants → Dudhwa → Uttar Pradesh terai → swamp deer

Why the others are wrong

(a) Ghana (Keoladeo) is in Rajasthan, not Assam.

(b) Gir is in Gujarat, Corbett in Uttarakhand.

(c) Drops Manas–Assam.

The trap

Ghana and Gir are swapped between States — each belongs to the other’s neighbour.

Also know

Corbett was created as Hailey National Park and lies on the Ramganga. Periyar’s lake was formed by the Mullaperiyar dam (1895). One-horned rhinos were brought back to Dudhwa in 1984. Keoladeo and Manas are World Heritage Sites.

🔒 Keoladeo Ghana = Rajasthan · Gir = Gujarat · Corbett = Uttarakhand.
