UPSC Prelims 2026 · Indian Geography · Industries, Ports and Transport
In what way(s) does the Vizhinjam International Seaport represent a structural shift in India’s maritime trade and logistics policy?
- By functioning exclusively as a domestic cargo hub to reduce reliance on coastal shipping and eliminate the need for foreign collaborations.
- By focusing primarily on passenger cruise tourism and heritage shipping to increase Kerala’s profile as a maritime heritage destination.
- By leveraging its natural deep draft and strategic location to reduce dependence on foreign trans-shipment ports, enhance revenue retention, and reposition India in regional maritime trade.
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 1 and 2
- (c) 2 and 3
- (d) 3 only
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) 3 only
Only statement 3 describes a trans-shipment hub.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG — the opposite Vizhinjam is an international container trans-shipment hub built with a private partner. “Exclusively domestic” and “no foreign collaboration” describe the opposite port.
2. ✗ WRONG — it is a cargo port It is built for giant container ships, not cruises or heritage shipping.
3. ✓ CORRECT — this is its whole point Natural depth of about 18–20 m close to shore and only ~10 nautical miles from the east–west shipping lane. India can now trans-ship its own containers at home instead of via Colombo, Singapore or Dubai.
The idea
A trans-shipment port transfers containers between large ocean-going ships and smaller feeder ships. It needs enough water depth for the large ships and a location close to their regular route. Keeping this transfer within India can reduce extra handling abroad and support local logistics services.
Cargo reaches an Indian port → Feeder ship carries containers to the hub → Containers transfer to a large ocean-going ship → The ship joins an international route → Transfer services and related business remain in India
Why the others are wrong
(a) Statement 1 is the reverse of what Vizhinjam does.
(b) Accepts the domestic-hub and cruise ideas because they sound like official policy language. Neither fits a deep-water container port.
(c) Statement 2 is wrong — it is a container port.
The trap
Options 1 and 2 are written in policy language, so they sound official. Test each against what a trans-shipment hub IS: huge ships, international routes, feeder links.
Elimination technique
An international trans-shipment hub connects ocean routes with feeder services. That rules out the exclusively domestic role in statement 1, removing (a) and (b). Its container-cargo purpose then rules out the passenger-tourism role in statement 2.
Also know
Vallarpadam at Kochi is another container trans-shipment terminal, so container transfer in India did not begin with Vizhinjam. Colombo and Singapore are regional trans-shipment hubs. A ship’s draft is the depth of its hull below the waterline; a deep-draft port has enough water depth to accommodate it. A natural harbour describes shelter from waves, which is a different feature.
🔒 Vizhinjam (Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala) = India’s first deep-water container trans-shipment port (commissioned 2025).
