Which one among the following has the largest shipyard in India? (2003)
- (a) Kolkata
- (b) Kochi
- (c) Mumbai
- (d) Visakhapatnam
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Kochi
Cochin Shipyard is India’s largest shipyard (it built INS Vikrant).
The idea
A shipyard builds or repairs ships, while a port primarily transfers cargo or passengers. Both benefit from sheltered water and access to the sea, but a busy port need not have the biggest shipyard. The “largest” comparison here belongs to the 2003 question, rather than an undated modern ranking.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Kolkata has GRSE, but it is smaller.
(c) Mumbai has Mazagon Dock (submarines, warships).
(d) Hindustan Shipyard, Visakhapatnam, is older but smaller.
The trap
Visakhapatnam was India’s first big shipyard — not the largest.
Also know
Mazagon Dock at Mumbai is associated with warships and submarines; Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers is at Kolkata; Hindustan Shipyard is at Visakhapatnam. Cochin Shipyard built the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, commissioned in 2022. A dry dock is an enclosed basin that can be drained so workers can reach a ship’s hull.
