UPSC Prelims 1986 · Indian Geography · Industries, Ports and Transport

Match the columns: A. Varanasi · B. Koyali · C. Pinjore · D. Alwaye — 1. Indian Rare Earths Ltd. · 2. Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd. · 3. Diesel Locomotive Works · 4. Petro-chemical complex

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) 3 4 2 1

Varanasi – DLW · Koyali – petrochemicals (refinery) · Pinjore – HMT · Alwaye – Indian Rare Earths.

The idea

Industrial matching questions test a specific factory or company, rather than everything made in a city. Several industries can share one urban region. Use the historical factory identity first, then separate it from later renaming or changes in its products.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Puts Varanasi as petrochemicals.

(c) Puts Varanasi as IREL.

(d) Puts Varanasi as IREL.

The trap

DLW Varanasi (now Banaras Locomotive Works) is the anchor.

Elimination technique

Varanasi–Diesel Locomotive Works gives A–3, which occurs only in (b). Confirm Koyali, Pinjore and Alwaye before finalising the code.

Also know

Chittaranjan is another locomotive-manufacturing anchor, while Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory makes coaches. Koyali’s Gujarat Refinery is near Vadodara; Mathura, Barauni and Panipat are other refinery locations. Alwaye is the older name for Aluva in Kerala, where rare-earth processing is linked with the monazite industry.

🔒 Koyali (Vadodara) refinery; Alwaye (Aluva) IREL.
