UPSC Prelims 1999 · Indian Geography · Industries, Ports and Transport

Match List I (Resorts) with List II (States): A. Chakrata · B. Haflong · C. Kalimpong · D. Kufri — 1. Assam · 2. West Bengal · 3. Uttar Pradesh · 4. Himachal Pradesh

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) 3 1 2 4

Chakrata – UP (now Uttarakhand) · Haflong – Assam · Kalimpong – West Bengal · Kufri – Himachal.

The idea

Place–State matching must use the boundaries that existed in the exam year. Uttarakhand was created from Uttar Pradesh in 2000, after this 1999 question. A later State name can be correct today while being absent from an older matching list.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Puts Chakrata in Assam.

(b) Puts Kalimpong in Himachal.

(d) Puts Chakrata in Assam.

The trap

Chakrata was in UP in 1999 — now Uttarakhand.

Elimination technique

In 1999 Chakrata belonged to Uttar Pradesh, so A–3 leaves (b) and (c). Kalimpong–West Bengal gives C–2 and selects (c); the remaining pairs confirm it.

Also know

Mussoorie and Nainital are other Uttarakhand hill stations; Shimla and Kasauli are in Himachal Pradesh. Darjeeling is a West Bengal counterpart to Kalimpong. Haflong lies in Assam’s Dima Hasao hills, so a hill resort need not be in a Himalayan State.

🔒 Haflong: Assam’s only hill station (Dima Hasao).
