UPSC Prelims 2023 · Indian Geography · Industries, Ports and Transport

With reference to India’s projects on connectivity, consider the following statements:

  1. East-West Corridor under Golden Quadrilateral Project connects Dibrugarh and Surat.
  2. Trilateral Highway connects Moreh in Manipur and Chiang Mai in Thailand via Myanmar.
  3. Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor connects Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with Kunming in China.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) None

All three have a wrong endpoint.

Statement by statement

1. ✗ WRONG — Silchar to Porbandar The East–West Corridor (part of the NHDP, not the Golden Quadrilateral) runs from Silchar (Assam) to Porbandar (Gujarat).

2. ✗ WRONG — it ends at Mae Sot The India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway runs from Moreh to Mae Sot in Thailand.

3. ✗ WRONG — Kolkata, not Varanasi BCIM was planned to link Kolkata with Kunming via Dhaka and Mandalay.

The idea

A transport route is defined by both its endpoints and the places between them. A correct starting point cannot rescue a wrong destination. Also separate a closed road circuit, such as the Golden Quadrilateral, from a cross-country corridor or a proposed international link.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Usually accepts the Trilateral Highway because Moreh is right. The Thai end is Mae Sot, not Chiang Mai.

(b) Accepts two “half-right” routes. Every statement has one wrong endpoint, so none survives.

(c) Each statement has one wrong endpoint.

The trap

Each project is real and one end is right (Moreh, Kunming). You have to check BOTH ends of every route.

Elimination technique

Check each complete endpoint pair. Mae Sot, rather than Chiang Mai, makes statement 2 false, removing “all three”. The wrong endpoints in statements 1 and 3 then leave “none”; one familiar place name is insufficient.

Also know

The Golden Quadrilateral joins Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The North–South Corridor runs from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, with a branch towards Kochi. Moreh is in Manipur opposite Tamu in Myanmar; the Kaladan route instead enters north-east India through Mizoram. A proposed route should not be assumed to be fully operational.

🔒 East–West = Silchar–Porbandar · North–South = Srinagar–Kanyakumari · Trilateral = Moreh–Mae Sot · BCIM = Kolkata–Kunming.
