UPSC Prelims 2010 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
With reference to the mineral resources of India, consider the following pairs: Mineral — 90% natural sources in. Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?
- Copper Jharkhand
- Nickel Orissa
- Tungsten Kerala
- (a) 1 and 2 only
- (b) 2 only
- (c) 1 and 3 only
- (d) 1, 2 and 3
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) 2 only
Only nickel–Odisha is right.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG Copper is spread across Rajasthan (Khetri), MP (Malanjkhand) and Jharkhand — not 90% in Jharkhand.
2. ✓ CORRECT About 90% of nickel reserves are in Odisha (Sukinda).
3. ✗ WRONG Tungsten is mainly in Rajasthan (Degana) and Karnataka, not Kerala.
The idea
A mineral can occur in several States even when one belt is especially famous. A claim about a percentage of resources asks for the distribution as of the question’s year. Resources, mine output and refined-metal production measure different things.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Accepts copper in Jharkhand.
(c) Accepts copper and tungsten wrongly.
(d) Accepts all three.
The trap
Jharkhand is a mineral giant, so copper there “feels” 90%.
Also know
Khetri, Malanjkhand and Singhbhum are the three useful copper anchors. Sukinda links nickel with chromite-bearing rocks and weathered deposits. Degana anchors tungsten in Rajasthan; Kerala’s heavy-mineral beach sands form a different mineral family.
🔒 Nickel: Sukinda (Odisha) · copper: Khetri, Malanjkhand · tungsten: Degana.
