UPSC Prelims 2008 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Which of the following pairs in respect of current power generation in India is/are correctly matched? (Rounded Figure) Select the correct answer using the code given below:
- Installed electricity Generation capacity: 100000 MW
- Electricity generation: 660 billion kWh
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 2 only
- (c) Both 1 and 2
- (d) Neither 1 nor 2
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) 2 only
Generation ~660 billion kWh was right.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG Installed capacity was about 1,40,000 MW, not 1,00,000 MW.
2. ✓ CORRECT Generation was about 660 billion kWh.
The idea
Capacity is the power a station can supply at a moment; generation is the energy it supplies over time. MW measures power, while kWh measures energy. The 2008 figures must be judged as of that exam year, without substituting a later electricity total.
Installed power is measured in MW → Plant operates for a number of hours → MW multiplied by hours gives MWh → Actual output reflects outages and loading → Annual generation is totalled in kWh or TWh
Why the others are wrong
(a) Accepts 1,00,000 MW.
(c) Accepts 1,00,000 MW.
(d) Rejects the generation figure.
The trap
Round numbers feel right; check them.
Also know
One billion kWh is one terawatt-hour (TWh). The plant load factor compares actual output with the output possible at full capacity over the same period. Fuel shortages, maintenance and seasonal water or sunlight can reduce generation without removing installed capacity.
🔒 Today: installed capacity ~450 GW (2025), ~46% non-fossil.
