UPSC Prelims 2007 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Shahgarh area in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan was in news in the year 2006 because of which one of the following?
- (a) Finding high quality gas reserves
- (b) Finding uranium deposits
- (c) Finding zinc deposits
- (d) Installation of wind power units
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) Finding high quality gas reserves
Shahgarh (Jaisalmer) was in the news for high-quality gas finds.
The idea
Oil and gas can accumulate in a sedimentary basin where porous reservoir rocks lie beneath a sealing layer. A desert surface does not rule out buried hydrocarbons. A news-based location question asks what was reported in the named year, not every activity now found nearby.
Buried organic matter is heated → Hydrocarbons form → Fluids move through permeable rock → A seal blocks further escape → Gas accumulates in a trap → Drilling tests the accumulation
Why the others are wrong
(c) Zinc is in Udaipur (Zawar).
(d) Jaisalmer has wind farms, but that wasn’t the 2006 news.
The trap
Jaisalmer’s wind parks make (d) tempting.
Also know
Barmer’s Mangala is an oil-field anchor, while Shahgarh belongs to the Jaisalmer gas setting. Zawar and Rampura Agucha are metallic-mineral anchors elsewhere in Rajasthan. Natural gas is mainly methane; associated gas occurs with oil, whereas some fields mainly contain gas.
🔒 Jaisalmer: Shahgarh gas; Barmer: Mangala oil (Cairn).
