UPSC Prelims 2008 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy

Which of the following minerals found in a natural way in the State of Chhattisgarh? Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. Bauxite
  2. Dolomite
  3. Iron ore
  4. Tin
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

All four occur in Chhattisgarh.

Statement by statement

1. ✓ YES Bauxite is mined in Mainpat and Kawardha.

2. ✓ YES Dolomite is plentiful.

3. ✓ YES Bailadila is a famous iron ore field.

4. ✓ YES Chhattisgarh is India’s only tin-producing State (Bastar, Dantewada).

The idea

A mineral-rich State can contain several different rock settings. Metallic ores, aluminium ores and carbonate rocks need not occur in the same deposit. The question asks whether each mineral occurs naturally, rather than whether the State leads production.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Drops tin.

(b) Drops dolomite and tin.

(c) Drops bauxite and iron ore.

The trap

Tin sounds rare in India — Chhattisgarh is its only producer.

Elimination technique

Bailadila establishes iron ore, removing (c). Mainpat establishes bauxite, and Bastar’s tin occurrence removes (a) and (b).

Also know

Bailadila and Dalli-Rajhara are iron-ore anchors, while Mainpat is associated with bauxite. Tin is obtained from cassiterite and is associated with the Bastar region. Dolomite is a calcium–magnesium carbonate used in steelmaking and other industries.

🔒 Chhattisgarh: only tin State (Dantewada); Bailadila iron ore.
