UPSC Prelims 2003 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
The thermal power plant of Bokaro is located in
- (a) Bihar
- (b) Chhattisgarh
- (c) Jharkhand
- (d) Orissa
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Jharkhand
Bokaro is in Jharkhand.
The idea
A plant keeps its physical location when a new State is formed, but its administrative label changes. The relevant boundary is the one in force as of the exam year. A familiar older State name can therefore be wrong in a later question.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Bokaro was in Bihar until Jharkhand was formed in 2000.
The trap
Older books say Bihar.
Elimination technique
Jharkhand had been formed in November 2000, before the 2003 exam. Apply that boundary to Bokaro, rather than its earlier Bihar label.
Also know
Durgapur is a West Bengal industrial anchor, while Rourkela is in Odisha. Bhilai is in Chhattisgarh, another State formed in 2000. Bokaro’s steel plant and thermal station are separate facilities linked to the wider Damodar industrial region.
