UPSC Prelims 2016 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements
Consider the following pairs: Community — Country Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?
- Kurd : Bangladesh
- Madhesi : Nepal
- Rohingya : Myanmar
- (a) 1 and 2
- (b) 2 only
- (c) 2 and 3
- (d) 3 only
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) 2 and 3
Madhesi – Nepal and Rohingya – Myanmar are right.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG Kurds live in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria (Kurdistan).
2. ✓ CORRECT Madhesis are the plains people of Nepal’s Terai.
3. ✓ CORRECT Rohingyas are a Muslim minority of Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
The idea
A community’s region of origin is different from a country where its refugees or migrants now live. Match the community to its established home region, not just to a country mentioned in related news. Cultural regions can also extend across several national borders.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Kurds have nothing to do with Bangladesh.
(b) Drops the Rohingyas.
(d) Drops the Madhesis.
The trap
Rohingya refugees are in Bangladesh — so “Bangladesh” feels familiar next to a refugee group.
Elimination technique
The Kurd–Bangladesh mismatch removes (a). It does not alone decide between (b), (c) and (d); confirming both Nepal’s Terai and Myanmar’s Rakhine selects (c).
Also know
Nepal’s Terai is the lowland belt adjoining the Indian plain, below its hill regions. Rakhine lies on Myanmar’s western coast beside the Bay of Bengal. Kurdish communities occupy adjoining parts of West Asia across national borders; “Kurdistan” is a cultural region, not one universally recognised sovereign country.
🔒 Kurds: largest stateless nation · Madhesis: Terai, Nepal · Rohingya: Rakhine, Myanmar.
