UPSC Prelims 2000 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements
Which one of the following pairs of primitive tribes and places of their inhabitation is NOT correctly matched?
- (a) Buksa : Pauri-Garhwal
- (b) Kol : Jabalpur
- (c) Munda : Chhotanagpur
- (d) Korwa : Kodagu
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Korwa : Kodagu
Not correct — Korwa live in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, not Kodagu (Karnataka).
The idea
A place–community match can use a district, plateau or broad region rather than a whole State. Anchor the place on a map before accepting a similar-sounding community name. A valid association does not mean the community is confined to that place.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Correct — Buksa live in the Uttarakhand Terai (key accepts Pauri-Garhwal).
(b) Correct — Kol live around Jabalpur.
(c) Correct — Munda live in Chhotanagpur.
Also know
Kodagu is a Western Ghats district in Karnataka; Chhotanagpur is an eastern plateau region centred on Jharkhand. The Terai–Bhabar belt supports communities such as Buksa and Tharu. Hill Korwa is a particularly vulnerable tribal group; the broader Korwa name should not be treated as identical to that subgroup.
🔒 Korwa: Chhattisgarh (PVTG).
