UPSC Prelims 2007 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

A: River Kalinadi is an east-flowing river in the southern part of India. R: The Deccan Plateau is higher along its western edge and gently slopes towards the Bay of Bengal in the east.

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) A is false but R is true

The Kalinadi flows WEST into the Arabian Sea at Karwar; R correctly describes the Deccan’s eastward tilt.

The idea

A broad plateau slope gives a general drainage pattern, not a rule for every river. Streams on the seaward side of the Western Ghats can descend directly to the Arabian Sea. In an assertion–reason question, first test each statement, then ask whether the reason explains the assertion.

Western Ghats form a divide → Eastern-side drainage crosses the plateau → Western-side valleys descend towards the coast → Kali follows a westward valley → River reaches the Arabian Sea near Karwar

Why the others are wrong

(a) A is false.

(b) A is false.

(c) A is false; R is true.

The trap

R is true and sounds like a reason — but it would make the river flow east, which it does not.

Elimination technique

Kali’s Arabian Sea outlet makes A false. The eastward plateau tilt in R remains true, so only the false-A, true-R code survives.

Also know

Sharavati and Netravati are other west-flowing Karnataka rivers. Krishna and its tributary Bhima belong to the east-flowing side. This Kali is not the Himalayan Kali–Sharda on the India–Nepal frontier; repeated river names need a State or basin anchor.

🔒 West-flowing Karnataka rivers: Kali, Sharavati, Netravati. Deccan tilts east → most rivers flow to the Bay.
