UPSC Prelims 2007 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

Which one of the following rivers originates at Amarkantak?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Narmada

The Narmada rises at Amarkantak (Maikal range).

The idea

A source region is where a river’s upper channels begin. Nearby uplands can belong to different drainage basins. Use the named source, not a loose “central India” association, to distinguish the alternatives.

Why the others are wrong

(a) The Damodar rises in the Chota Nagpur plateau.

(b) The Mahanadi rises near Sihawa (Chhattisgarh).

(d) The Tapi rises near Multai (Betul).

The trap

The Mahanadi rises close by, but not at Amarkantak.

Also know

Son and Johila also begin in the Amarkantak region but feed the Ganga system. Tapi begins near Multai in Madhya Pradesh; Mahanadi near Sihawa in Chhattisgarh. Damodar belongs to Chota Nagpur. Godavari’s Trimbak source is farther west in Maharashtra.
