In India diamonds are quarried from
- (a) Golconda
- (b) Jaipur
- (c) Ratnagiri
- (d) Panna
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Panna
Panna (MP) has India’s only working diamond mine (Majhgawan).
The idea
A gem’s mining place, trading centre and cutting centre can be different locations. Diamond deposits occur in primary host rocks or in sediments reworked from them. A famous historic gem name is therefore not enough to locate the deposit asked.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Golconda was a famous diamond trading centre, not today’s mine.
(b) Jaipur is a gem-cutting centre.
The trap
Golconda is famous (Koh-i-Noor) — but for trade, not modern mining.
Also know
Majhgawan is the Panna-area diamond anchor. Hutti and Kolar belong to gold geography, while Wajrakarur in Andhra Pradesh is associated with diamond-bearing pipes. Kimberlite and lamproite are volcanic rocks that can bring diamonds towards the surface.
