The coal mining areas of the Damodar Valley region include

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Raniganj, Jharia and Giridih

Raniganj, Jharia and Giridih lie in the Damodar valley.

The idea

Gondwana coal formed from ancient plant material buried in sedimentary basins. The Damodar coal belt crosses modern State boundaries, so its identity is geological rather than purely administrative. Other coalfields may belong to different river-valley systems.

Plant material accumulates → Sediment buries it in a basin → Burial compacts the material → Heat and pressure form coal → Later erosion exposes some seams → Mining follows the coal-bearing layers

Why the others are wrong

(a) Korba and Raigarh are in Chhattisgarh.

(b) Singareni is in Telangana.

(d) Talcher is in Odisha (Mahanadi valley).

Elimination technique

Korba’s Mahanadi-region setting removes (a), and Singareni’s Godavari setting removes (b). Talcher is outside the Damodar belt, removing (d).

Also know

Bokaro and North and South Karanpura are additional Damodar-belt anchors. Talcher and Ib valley belong to the wider Mahanadi coal region, while Singareni belongs to the Godavari valley. Coalfield association does not mean every part of a coalfield lies beside the present main river.

🔒 Damodar valley: Raniganj, Jharia, Bokaro, Giridih, Karanpura.
