UPSC Prelims 1990 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Which of the following metals is extracted from the Monazite sand found in plenty in India?
- (a) Gold
- (b) Uranium
- (c) Thorium
- (d) Copper
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Thorium
Thorium is extracted from monazite sand.
The idea
Some minerals supply more than one useful element. Monazite links rare-earth chemistry with nuclear-resource geography because thorium can occur in the same grains. The question asks which metal is recovered, rather than whether every listed element is completely absent.
Why the others are wrong
(b) Monazite has only traces of uranium.
The trap
Uranium is the famous nuclear fuel, but monazite is the thorium mineral.
Also know
Zircon supplies zirconium, and ilmenite and rutile supply titanium from the wider beach-sand family. Uranium deposits have different anchors such as Jaduguda and Tummalapalle. Thorium-232 is fertile and can be converted into fissile uranium-233.
🔒 Monazite → thorium (+ rare earths).
