UPSC Prelims 1990 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Match List I (Metal extracted) with List II (Location of site): A. Copper · B. Uranium · C. Nickel · D. Chromite — 1. Jaduguda · 2. Jhawar · 3. Malanjkhand · 4. Sukinda
- (a) 2 4 1 3
- (b) 4 3 1 2
- (c) 3 1 2 4
- (d) 3 1 4 2
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) 3 1 2 4
The key: copper – Malanjkhand · uranium – Jaduguda · nickel – Jhawar · chromite – Sukinda.
The idea
An ore belt may contain associated metals, but each named mine still needs its own location–mineral match. Copper, uranium and chromite have different recovery processes. A shared mineral-rich State is not enough to justify moving an ore label from one site to another.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Gives copper to Jhawar.
(b) Gives copper to Sukinda.
(d) Gives nickel to Sukinda.
The trap
Sukinda has both chromite and nickel — the key gives it chromite.
Also know
Khetri and Singhbhum are sister copper anchors to Malanjkhand. Tummalapalle is another uranium anchor alongside Jaduguda. Sukinda associates chromite with nickel-bearing weathered material, while Zawar in Rajasthan is associated with lead and zinc; similarly spelled site names need care.
🔒 Sukinda (Odisha): chromite + nickel.
