UPSC Prelims 1998 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy

Match List-I (Minerals) with List-II (Mining area): A. Graphite · B. Lead · C. Salt · D. Silver — 1. Bellary · 2. Didwana · 3. Rampa · 4. Zawar

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) 1 4 2 3

The key: graphite – Bellary · lead – Zawar · salt – Didwana · silver – Rampa.

The idea

A mineral name can refer to a main mined product or a material recovered along with another ore. Silver is often recovered from lead–zinc ores, whereas salt can accumulate through evaporation. Matching should use known deposit associations rather than a vague “mineral-rich region” label.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Gives salt to Bellary.

(c) Gives lead to Bellary.

(d) Gives lead to Rampa.

The trap

Lead–Zawar and salt–Didwana are the sure pairs; only (b) has both.

Also know

Graphite is carbon with a layered structure and is used in electrodes, lubricants and heat-resistant products. Zawar, Rampura Agucha and Rajpura–Dariba belong to Rajasthan’s lead–zinc family. Sambhar is another inland salt-lake anchor alongside Didwana; saline lakes differ from sea-salt works.

🔒 Zawar (Udaipur): lead-zinc-silver.
