For which one of the following, is Satara well-known?
- (a) Thermal power plant
- (b) Wind energy plant
- (c) Hydro-electric plant
- (d) Nuclear power plant
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Wind energy plant
Satara’s windy Western Ghats plateau hosts some of India’s biggest early wind farms.
The idea
Wind turbines use the motion of air rather than heat from a fuel. Exposed ridges and plateaus can give strong, sustained winds. A district can contain both wind and hydropower sites, so “well-known for” asks for the intended local association rather than exclusive occurrence.
Pressure differences drive wind → Terrain channels or exposes the airflow → Wind turns turbine blades → Rotor drives the generator → Electricity is supplied to the grid
Why the others are wrong
(a) Satara has no notable thermal plant.
(c) Koyna hydro is in Satara district too — a strong alternative.
The trap
Koyna dam lies in Satara district, which makes (c) arguable.
Also know
Chalkewadi and Vankusawade are Satara-area wind anchors. Muppandal in Tamil Nadu benefits from the Aralvaimozhi wind corridor. Koyna is a hydropower project in Satara district, showing why district-wide energy labels can overlap.
🔒 Wind: Satara, Muppandal (TN), Jaisalmer.
