UPSC Prelims 2007 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Consider the following statements: Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- Balaghat is known for its diamond mines.
- Majhgawan is known for its manganese deposits.
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 2 only
- (c) Both 1 and 2
- (d) Neither 1 nor 2
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Neither 1 nor 2
The two minerals are swapped.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG Balaghat is known for manganese.
2. ✗ WRONG Majhgawan (Panna) is known for diamonds.
The idea
Two real mining places can be matched to the wrong minerals. A shared State label does not mean they belong to the same deposit family. Use the individual mine association before testing whether either statement is correct.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Accepts Balaghat diamonds.
(b) Accepts Majhgawan manganese.
(c) Accepts both swaps.
The trap
Both places are real mining sites — only swapped.
Elimination technique
Balaghat’s manganese association rejects statement 1; Majhgawan’s diamond association rejects statement 2. The swapped labels leave neither statement correct.
Also know
Nagpur–Bhandara in Maharashtra continues the central Indian manganese family. Malanjkhand, also in Balaghat district, is a copper anchor and should not be confused with Balaghat’s manganese mine. Panna and Majhgawan belong to diamond geography.
🔒 Balaghat = manganese · Majhgawan = diamonds (NMDC).
