UPSC Prelims 1979 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Which among the following States possesses oil resources based on geographical location?
- (a) Kerala
- (b) Nagaland
- (c) Assam
- (d) Meghalaya
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Assam
Assam has India’s oldest and main onshore oil fields.
The idea
Hydrocarbons are associated with sedimentary basins containing suitable source rocks, reservoirs and seals. A State’s surface vegetation or hills alone cannot establish its oil potential. Deposit occurrence, discovery and commercial production are separate facts.
Why the others are wrong
(b) Nagaland has some oil, but production is stalled.
Also know
Digboi, Naharkatia and Moran anchor upper Assam’s oil region. Gujarat’s Cambay basin and Rajasthan’s Barmer basin are other onshore examples. Mumbai High and Krishna–Godavari provide offshore counterparts; the State list here should not be treated as a complete list of Indian oil-bearing regions.
🔒 Onshore oil: Assam, Gujarat, Rajasthan. Offshore: Mumbai High, KG.
