UPSC Prelims 1984 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Iron ore mines are located in which of the following group of places?
- (a) Bokaro, Balaghat, Hazaribagh
- (b) Singhbhum, Monghyr, Singareni
- (c) Jharia, Raniganj, Wardha
- (d) Singhbhum, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Singhbhum, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar
Singhbhum, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar are iron ore belts.
The idea
An iron-ore belt can extend across districts and State borders. A steel-plant town is a place where ore is processed, not necessarily where it is mined. Check the deposit family before treating all industrial or coal towns as iron-ore locations.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Bokaro is a steel plant; Hazaribagh is mica.
(b) Singareni is coal.
(c) Jharia and Raniganj are coal.
The trap
Steel plant towns are not ore mines.
Elimination technique
Singareni is a coal anchor, removing (b). Jharia and Raniganj remove (c), while Bokaro’s industrial role does not make the group in (a) an iron-ore group.

Noamundi, Gua and Kiriburu are Jharkhand iron-ore anchors; Gorumahisani and the Keonjhar belt are Odisha counterparts. Bailadila and Dalli-Rajhara form the Chhattisgarh family. Hematite and magnetite are the two principal iron-ore types to distinguish.
