UPSC Prelims 1984 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Which of the following States produces maximum quantity of lignite?
- (a) Gujarat
- (b) Rajasthan
- (c) Jammu & Kashmir
- (d) Tamil Nadu
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu (Neyveli) produces the most lignite.
The idea
A State’s production depends on working mines as well as deposits in the ground. A “maximum quantity” question must use output as of its exam year, rather than a later reserve ranking. Neyveli provides the location anchor for the 1984 lignite comparison.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Gujarat is second.
(b) Rajasthan has some lignite.
Also know
Lignite also occurs in Gujarat’s Kachchh region and Rajasthan’s Bikaner region. Compared with bituminous coal, it generally has more moisture and less heat per unit mass. Pit-head power stations reduce the cost of transporting this bulky fuel.
