Which of the following is not true about Gujarat?
- (a) It is the largest producer of salt
- (b) It is the largest producer of milk products
- (c) It is the largest producer of tobacco
- (d) It is the largest producer of groundnut
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) It is the largest producer of tobacco
Not true in 1989 — Andhra Pradesh was the largest tobacco producer.
The idea
A production ranking is a year-specific statistic, not a permanent geographical property. It also depends on whether the measure is raw output, processed products or marketed output. Gujarat’s strong agricultural and industrial links should not be treated as proof that it leads every commodity.
Why the others are wrong
(a) True — Gujarat makes most of India’s salt.
(b) True — Gujarat (Amul) leads in milk products.
(d) True — Gujarat leads in groundnut.
The trap
Gujarat does grow tobacco (Anand), so (c) is subtle.
Also know
The Rann of Kachchh anchors salt production, while the Anand region anchors dairy cooperatives. Groundnut is an oilseed; tobacco is a separate commercial crop with different growing and marketing regions. Milk output and production of milk products are different measures.
🔒 Gujarat: salt, groundnut, cotton, milk (Amul).
