Who was the Provisional President of the Constituent Assembly before Dr. Rajendra Prasad took over?
- (a) C. Rajagopalachari
- (b) Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
- (c) T.T. Krishnamachari
- (d) Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha
At the first sitting (9 December 1946) the oldest member, Sachchidananda Sinha, was made temporary President, following the French practice. Rajendra Prasad was elected President on 11 December 1946.
The idea
Constituent Assembly timeline: 9 Dec 1946 first meeting (Sinha, provisional) → 11 Dec Rajendra Prasad President, H.C. Mukherjee Vice-President → 13 Dec Objectives Resolution (Nehru) → 26 Nov 1949 Constitution adopted.
9 Dec 1946 · Sinha (oldest) → 11 Dec · Rajendra Prasad → 13 Dec · Objectives Resolution → 26 Nov 1949 · adopted
Why the others are wrong
(a) Rajagopalachari was later the first Indian Governor-General, not the Assembly’s chair.
(b) Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee (from 29 August 1947), not the Assembly.
(c) T.T. Krishnamachari was a Drafting Committee member, added in 1948.
The trap
Ambedkar is the name most linked with the Constitution, but he chaired the Drafting Committee, not the Assembly.
🔒 Provisional President = Sachchidananda Sinha · President = Rajendra Prasad · Drafting Committee = Ambedkar · Constitutional Adviser = B.N. Rau.
