UPSC Prelims 2017 · Polity · Making, Preamble & Citizenship
Which one of the following objectives is not embodied in the Preamble to the Constitution of India?
- (a) Liberty of thought
- (b) Economic liberty
- (c) Liberty of expression
- (d) Liberty of belief
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Economic liberty
Economic and political appear with JUSTICE (“social, economic and political”), not with liberty. There is no “economic liberty” in the Preamble.
The idea
Match each ideal to its list: Justice — social, economic, political. Liberty — thought, expression, belief, faith, worship. Equality — of status and of opportunity. Fraternity — dignity of the individual, unity and integrity of the Nation.
Why the others are wrong
(a) In the text: “LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship”.
(c) Expression is the second of the five liberties.
(d) Belief is the third of the five liberties.
The trap
“Economic” is a Preamble word, just in the wrong basket. UPSC moved it from Justice to Liberty.
🔒 Justice = S-E-P · Liberty = T-E-B-F-W (thought, expression, belief, faith, worship) · Equality = status + opportunity.
