UPSC Prelims 2008 · Environment · Wild Places

Which one among the following has the maximum number of National Parks?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the most national parks (9), many of them small island parks.

The idea

The count of parks says nothing about their size. In an island group each small island or patch of sea is notified separately, so the Andaman and Nicobar Islands end up with many small national parks.

Hundreds of small islands → Each has its own forest, reef or nesting beach → Protected one by one → Many small parks

Why the others are wrong

(c) Assam has several well-known parks, but fewer in number.

The trap

Assam has the famous parks; A&N has the most.
