UPSC Prelims 2006 · Environment · Wild Places

Match List I (National Park/Wildlife Sanctuary) with List II (Nearby Town): A. Chandra Prabha · B. Karera · C. Jaisamand · D. Nahargarh — 1. Jaipur · 2. Jhansi · 3. Agra · 4. Varanasi · 5. Udaipur

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) A-4, B-2, C-5, D-1

Chandra Prabha – Varanasi · Karera – Jhansi · Jaisamand – Udaipur · Nahargarh – Jaipur.

The idea

In a four-pair matching question you rarely need all four. Fix the one or two pairs you are sure of and the options do the rest. Here the names help: Nahargarh is the fort above Jaipur and Jaisamand is the great lake near Udaipur.

Nahargarh → Jaipur: removes (a) and (d) → Jaisamand → Udaipur: removes (b) → Only (c) is left

Why the others are wrong

(a) Puts Karera near Jaipur.

(b) Puts Chandra Prabha near Udaipur.

The trap

Nahargarh–Jaipur (the fort) and Jaisamand–Udaipur (the lake) are the sure pairs.

Also know

Chandra Prabha (Chandauli, near Varanasi) is known for the Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls; Asiatic lions were once released there but did not survive. Karera (Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh) was created for the great Indian bustard, which later disappeared from it. Jaisamand lake was built in 1685 and is among the largest man-made lakes of Asia.

🔒 Karera (MP, near Jhansi) was once a Great Indian Bustard sanctuary.
